Don’t Be A Sucker

When I used to own the cleaning and restoration
company, I was constantly bombarded by ad reps
who touted their publication as “the best”
advertising source on the planet.
Didn’t matter whether it was a rep from the
local newspaper, Val Pak, Money Mailer or the
Yellow Pages. Every one of them swore they had
the best thing going.
But here’s the deal…
All of these sources are what I call
“advertising mediums”. Some of them worked well
for my business, and some of them didn’t.
Only problem is, most folks don’t know how to
track their ad response, so they have no idea
whether an ad is performing well (and making
cashola) or not.
And truth is, the ad reps count on this. In fact,
they don’t want you tracking your ads.
Cause if you did that, and discovered that the ad
wasn’t putting bucks in your pocket, you’d stop
running it.
They hope you NEVER track your ad. That way
you’ll just keep on running it and wasting all
your moneeee.
Here’s an email that explains just what I’m
talking about. It comes from an advertising rep
who thought I just fell off the turnip truck.

Dear Kevin,
I am a writer for many websites and newspapers,
as well as having a degree in marketing and
business.
I couldn't help but notice that you are paying
an OUTRAGEOUS price for a banner ad on a website
that does little or nothing for you in comparison
to our high traffic sites.
All I ask is take a look at our sites that we
design and host, and then decide for yourself
where you would be better off spending your
advertising money. We have a design and web
hosting company as well and our rates are at
least 50 times lower than what you pay now for
10 times the exposure plus free radio ads.

Thanks for the email.
I took a look at the sites you mentioned, yet
none of them have ANY kind of Alexa ranking.
This let’s me know that your sites aren't
getting much traffic.
I gotta be honest, It ain't gonna do me much
good to advertise on a site that doesn't get a
decent amount of traffic.
Paying 50 times lower of a price for 10 times
the exposure sounds great on the surface, but
you’re gonna have to show me some verifiable
traffic stats for your websites before I’d
even consider doing any advertising with you.
I track every one of my ads very closely, and
rest assured, if they don't pull their own
weight and produce cashola for me, they get
the axe.
Truth is, I don't mind paying more for
advertising, as long as it pays off.

Here’s a few things you need to be aware of.
Steve is one of those reps who sits on the
computer, looking for ads like mine, so he can
go to my website and get my email address.
He then shoots me a generic “copy and paste”
email, touting his college degree, in hopes that
it will carry some weight with me.
That was his first mistake.
In his second paragraph, he firmly buries his
foot in his mouth.
How in the heck does he know if I’m paying an
outrageous price for my ad?
He doesn’t!
He then claims that my ad is doing “little to
nothing” for me.
This statement also let’s me know that he’s
completely ignorant.
For crying out loud, if my ad wasn’t working, I
wouldn’t continue running it.
He then goes on to tell me about his high-traffic
websites (of which I won’t reveal, in order to
protect this guys identity).
Only problem was, he didn’t count on me doing a
little bit of research (which took less than a
minute) and finding out that his websites ain’t
gettin squat for traffic.
And though it just takes a minute to do this
research, most folks don’t do it. As a result,
they get suckered in by the advertising rep.
Fact is, I know the exact amount of cashola that
each one of my ads produces for me on a monthly
basis.
In fact, I typically spend 200-300 a month on
advertising for my getmoldsolutions.com project.
Yet those ads produce 7-10 Grand a month for me.
That’s a 23 to 1 return on my investment, which
makes me a VERY happy camper.
So, the lesson is:
Don’t get suckered in by smooth talking ad reps.
