This week’s article is sure to get a few of you
riled up, but I gotta call it like I see it.
Last week I had a long phone conversation with
a gal who was seriously frustrated after several
years of failing in her part time business.
After a little prodding, I found out what the
problem was.
She was taking all her business advice from
some schmo who had absolutely NO “real world”
experience.
Fact is, they’d never owned a business in their
life.
The whole conversation reminded me of a funny
story I once heard about a fat doctor who had
been on the Larry King show.
As the story goes, during the interview, Larry
asked the doctor if he liked food.
The surprised doctor answered yes, and Larry
said, “it looks like it”.
Larry continued, “You look like you enjoy food
a lot”.
The whole interview brought up a great question…
Should you take diet advice from a fat doctor,
or should you pay a little more and get your
advice from a doctor who’s in great shape, and
practices what they preach?
It reminds me of a client I called on when I
used to own the cleaning and restoration
business. Her request was simple: The carpet
warranty required that it be cleaned yearly,
and she wanted it done for as little as possible.
I explained that we offered a top notch service,
and even backed it up with a one hundred percent
monee back garanteeee.
Only problem was, I couldn’t offer that level of
service, and do the job for a cheap price.
So I asked her, “What’s most important to you,
paying a fair price and getting a deep down
thorough carpet cleaning that will leave your
carpet looking great for a long time, or paying
a cheap price and getting a quick brush-the-dirt-
off-the-top cleaning that won’t make your carpet
look any better than it does right now”?
“Well”, she replied, “This carpet cost me a lot of
monee and I want to make it last as long as possible”.
After hearing this, I asked, “Would you trust the
cheapest cleaning company to help you accomplish
that goal”?
“No”, she answered, “Not since you explained it that
way”.
She never quibbled about price again, and remained
a happy client of the business until the day I
sold it.
In fact, she’s still a client to this day, cause
the new owner is giving her the same level of
service that I did.
So here’s my point…
Do you want the cheapest, or do you want the best,
from someone who practices what he preaches.
Some folks think I charge too much for my products.
Others feel that I should even give em away.
But the funny thing is, none of the clients who own
