What Not To Do

One of the hard lessons I learned early in my
business career was to NOT follow what
everyone else is doing.
In fact, if you want to be extremely
successful in life and business, watch what
everyone else does, then do the exact
opposite.
Let me explain what I’m talking about.
I started my first business (which was a
cleaning and restoration company) back in May
of 1997, and within one year I was failing
miserably, almost to the point of having to
close the doors for good.
I’d sunk my life savings into this business,
so as you can imagine, it was an extremely
difficult time in my life, watching all my
dreams and aspiration slowly go down the
tubes.
Fortunately I met this guy by the name of
Joe, who helped me turn the entire business
around.
His help didn’t come cheap, but it was worth
every penny.
The first thing he pointed out was the fact
that my business looked exactly the same as
all the other cleaning companies in my town.
He said, “Kevin, you haven’t given your
prospective clients any reason to choose you,
instead of your competition.
Your advertising looks just like everyone
else’s, except for the fact that you’re
charging lower prices”.
“Why in the heck are you charging lower
prices?”, he asks.
“Well, I said, “I figured if I charged lower
prices, I’d get all the work”.
“Oh really”, he responds, “And how’s that
working out for you?’
“Not too well”, I reply, “I’m getting all
these cheapskate clients who don’t value the
service I’m trying to offer”.
“Imagine that”, he says as he begins laughing,
“Look Kevin, here’s the deal. If you want to
attract high-end clients, you’ve got to charge
premium prices.
People who want quality expect to pay a little
more.
And the other thing you gotta do is start
setting yourself apart from the competition”.
To make a long story short, I worked with Joe
over the next several years, and my little
company became one of the most successful
cleaning companies in Washington State.

By doing things different than everyone else…
