Can You Handle The Criticism

One of my marketing mentors, Dan Kennedy has a
saying that goes like this, “If your marketing
hasn’t made someone angry by noon each day, then
you’re not doing it right, and you’re probably
not making any money”.
When I first heard Dan say those words, about 5
years ago, it threw me for a loop.
After all, I’ve always been a pretty easy going
guy, and I’ve never set out to intentionally make
someone else angry.
But you know what?
I’ve discovered a few things over the last few
years, and truth is, I used to be a Casper
milk-toast, with no back bone.
But not any more!
Let me explain:
I’ve been sending out weekly emails ever since I
started the Get Mold Solutions website, almost
5 years ago.
Ever since I started the project, it had always
been my goal to help as many people as I could.
That’s why I was so shocked when I received a
hate email from a subscriber on my list, who was
insulted by something I’d said in an email.
And I gotta be honest here, while I don’t remember
exactly what I said, but I can assure you, it was
something real trivial.
Like I said, back then I was this Casper milk-toast,
and I tried hard not to offend anyone.
After getting this email (and feeling wrongly
accused by this subscriber), I decided to share it
with the rest of my mailing list.
I couldn’t believe what happened next.
As soon as I sent out the weekly email, I got a
flood of response from the rest of my subscribers,
saying things like “Way to go Kevin”, “You did the
right thing” and “Keep doing what you’re doing”.
And yes, I got a few more hate mails from nay-sayers
as well.
But something else happened as well!
My sales for that week went through the roof.
In fact, I made more money in that one week, than I
had previously made in an entire month.
The words of my marketing mentor immediately came to
mind, “If your marketing hasn’t made someone angry by
noon each day, then you’re not doing it right, and
you’re probably not making any money”.
At that moment, I realized just how true those words
are, and that’s when my Casper mild-toast personality
was laid to rest.
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t set out to make folks
angry on a daily basis, but I have make a change in my
mindset.
These days I’m certainly not afraid of a little
criticism and controversy.
In fact, I look forward to it, especially since I know
it’s gonna put cashola in the bank for me.
Unfortunately, most people never figure this out, and
as a result, they’re not successful in their business
life or their personal life.
It’s like they’re walking around on egg shells, trying
not to upset a single person (like I used to do),
because they’re afraid of criticism.
But the truth is, successful people are immune to
criticism and gladly accepts it.
Why?
Because they understand that criticism is a gage of
their success, and if you ain’t getting any criticism,
you ain’t takin enough action.
The more action you take, the more people are going to
find out about you. And along the way, you’re bound to
be criticized.
And when it happens…
