A Town In Shock
By Automatic Income Expert: Kevin Thompson
As I write this article, my small hometown is
in a state of shock.
Last night at about 8PM, two police officers
noticed a fire at a local furniture
manufacturing company (located just a few blocks
from my home) and alerted the fire department.
By the time the firemen arrived, just two minutes
later, the three story facility was completely
engulfed in flames.
At about this time, I was relaxing in the living
room and my wife Lisa was helping our daughter with
homework, when she noticed that the sky outside
was a bright red.
When Lisa stepped outside to see what was going
on, she let out a shriek that made me jump out
of my seat.
“Oh my God, the furniture warehouse is on fire!”,
she screamed.
And that’s when we heard the sirens on the fire
trucks.
Lisa, Kaitlynn and I walked down the street to get
a closer look, and as you can imagine, so did
everyone else in the area.
For the next couple hours, we all watched in
amazement as firefighters from seven different
departments battled to get the blaze under control
and stop it from spreading to other buildings in
the immediate area.
The view from the end of my driveway.
And though the fireman worked through the night,
for more than 15 hours, they were unable to save
the building.
It was a complete loss.
This morning, after Lisa and I got the kids off to
school, we decided to drive by the warehouse.
When we arrived, we found the firemen still
putting out hot spots on the now smoldering fire.
What's left of the warehouse.
Firemen still at work... 15 hours later.
We also spoke with the company owners and many of
their employees, most of who were in tears.
Talk about a sobering experience.
The owners are now faced with the herculean task
of re-building the company and more than one
hundred of their employees are without jobs.
The furniture company had been in business since
1943 and some of the employees had worked for the
company for more than 18 years.
While it truly is a tragic event, I’m grateful
that no one was hurt and that no other buildings
were damaged.
It’s also caused me to think about a lot of things.
You see…
When I used to own the cleaning company, a tragedy
like this could have easily destroyed the business
I’d worked so hard to build.
But now things are different.
Since I’ve re-structured my life, and taken a much
more proactive role in how I structure my business,
such an event would not bring my business to its
knees.
Now don’t get me wrong, if my home caught fire, it
would certainly be a tragic event, but it wouldn’t
put me out of business.
Not even close!
In fact, it wouldn’t even put a dent in my income.
Unfortunately, when most folks start a business of
their own, they give little thought to things like:
1. How do I want my business to fit into my lifestyle?
2. Do I need, or even want employees? (a little
secret – no employees is better)
3. Would it be immune to a tragic loss, or would such
an event put me on the streets?
These are just a few of the questions you must have
very good answers for, yet few people even consider
them.
Whether you’re thinking of starting your own business
and want to do it right, or whether you already have
your own business and need to make some changes, I’ll
